There is something about blue that just feels cozy.

Maybe it’s the way a soft, faded blue looks against a green garden, or how blue glassware instantly makes an outdoor table feel a little more special. Whatever it is, I’ve been drawn to the color lately—especially for creating the kind of outdoor space that makes you want to stay awhile.

For this edition of The Edit, I pulled together a few pieces for one very specific kind of morning: coffee outside, nowhere you need to be quite yet, and a patio that feels just pulled together enough.

Think soft blue, warm wood, natural texture and a little bit of charm.

1. Start With a Blue Fringe Patio Umbrella

2. Bring Your Favorite Mug Outside

I’m firmly in the camp that a pretty mug makes morning coffee better.

For this edit, I love a simple speckled ceramic mug because it keeps the blue from becoming too much of a theme. The creamy, handmade-looking finish adds warmth and texture and works just as beautifully inside the kitchen when summer is over.

It’s also an easy example of something I try to keep in mind when shopping for seasonal pieces: not everything has to be seasonal. A good mug is a good mug in July, October, or January.

3. Add a Little Blue Glassware

This might be my favorite small detail.

Textured blue drinking glasses bring in another layer of color without requiring a big commitment. Set them out for lemonade at lunch, iced coffee in the afternoon or cocktails when friends come over.

And because the color is in the glass itself, you don’t need much else on the table. A pitcher, a few glasses and maybe some cut flowers from the yard are plenty.

For a traditional home, I particularly like textured glass over something ultra-modern. It gives the table that slightly collected, maybe I’ve had these forever quality that I love.

4. Ground Everything With Natural Texture

Once you have blue in a few places, bring in something natural.

A round woven rug is an easy way to soften hard patio or porch flooring while adding warmth beneath a small seating arrangement. Natural-fiber and jute-look rugs also pair beautifully with blue because they keep the overall palette relaxed rather than overly coastal.

One important note when shopping: check whether the specific rug you’re considering is actually rated for outdoor use. Some natural-fiber rugs are intended primarily for indoor spaces, while other woven-look designs are made specifically for patios and porches.

For this look, I’d choose something simple and textural rather than heavily patterned. The goal is to make the blue pieces stand out.

5. Create a Spot You’ll Actually Sit In

And finally, the piece that turns a pretty patio into somewhere you’ll actually use: a comfortable chair.

I love the combination of a warm wood frame and creamy cushion here. It has that classic indoor-furniture feeling but still looks relaxed enough for outside. Acacia outdoor seating is also widely available in this style; current Wayfair options pair wood frames with light cushions for a similar warm, neutral look.

Add a tiny side table—or even pull over a garden stool—and suddenly you have somewhere for your coffee, book and phone.

That’s really the whole idea behind this edit. You don’t necessarily need an entirely new patio set.

Sometimes one comfortable chair, some shade and a place to put your coffee are enough to create a corner you’ll actually look forward to using.

How I’d Put the Look Together

I wouldn’t try to match every shade of blue perfectly. In fact, I think this look gets better when you don’t.

Start with the umbrella as your largest dose of color. Then repeat blue once or twice in much smaller ways—like the drinking glasses or a throw pillow. Let cream, natural wood, woven texture, and garden greenery fill in everything else.

That’s what keeps the look feeling collected and traditional instead of overly coordinated.

And if you’re working with a small porch or patio, you don’t need all five pieces. A chair + umbrella + little table with your favorite mug would capture the same feeling.
